What Do You Know About Teeth Whitening?

Let’s start with what you already know. You probably know that teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dentistry treatments available. You probably know people who have had the treatment and they have likely reported that they are very happy with their whitening treatments. You may also, however, have heard from people who have reservations, and that may be why you are hesitating to consider tooth whitening. So, let’s have a little fun here and do a quiz. What do you really know about teeth whitening?

We are going to offer four statements about teeth whitening, and ask you to simply answer true or false. Let’s start the teeth whitening quiz.

  1. I don’t need professional whitening because I can buy whitening strips at the drugstore.

  2. Anyone can have professional whitening treatments.

  3. It hurts to have your teeth whitened.

  4. Whitening treatments can ruin your teeth.

Now, here are your answers: 1) F 2) T 3) F 4) F

How did you do on the teeth whitening quiz? Some of those answers may leave you feeling a little perplexed. For instance, you are wondering about number two. Why shouldn’t anyone be able to have a whitening treatment?  This is one of those situations where the answer is “sort of true,” but also “sort of false.” Almost anyone who is in good health, and whose teeth are in good shape can have a whitening treatment. However, if you are pregnant or breast feeding, we advise against it, simply because not enough is known about what can affect a fetus or a nursing baby. Probably nothing would go wrong, but it is best to avoid on the side of caution.

Now, to back up a bit, let’s talk about number one. You could buy whitening strips, but they won’t work the way you want them to. So you don’t exactly “need” professional whitening, but it will work much better for you.

On to the more important considerations – numbers three and four. First of all, your teeth may be a bit sensitive following whitening, but the sensitivity should disappear within 24 hours. The treatment itself will not hurt. And whitening treatments will not damage your teeth. You can have a whitening treatment without having to worry about any harm to your tooth enamel.
