Dental Crowns FAQs
We felt it a good idea to provide patients with answers to these dental crowns FAQs. As a preferred dentist in Staten Island, Drs. Galligan and Villa Dental Studio offer a range of cosmetic, general and restorative dentistry treatments. Dental crowns are one of the most commonly used solutions, and yet many of our Staten Island, NY still have unanswered questions. We hope these dental crowns FAQs can address them!
What, exactly, is a dental crown?
This has to be in the top spot in our dental crowns FAQs because so few of our patients understand what we mean when we tell them that they are in need of this treatment. Rather than being a typical crown, a band of metal, dental crowns are caps designed to look and function like the original crown of your tooth. You won’t be able to tell it is not a “real” tooth, and it will be so strong and durable that it will protect your tooth while working like a normal one.
Why do I need a dental crown?
Again, we included this in our dental crowns FAQs because it is so often asked. We do not just recommend crowns as an option. We use them when your tooth is too vulnerable or compromised to stand on its own. For example, we will use them for patients who have overly large areas of decay, old amalgam fillings, damaged or fractured teeth, deeply stained teeth that cannot be whitened, or root canals. In all of these ways, the crowns supply a solution that no other treatment can offer. They restore the tooth to the best condition possible, ending pain and allowing you to use the tooth as before.
How long does it take?
A dental crown is the way we finish some sort of treatment. We might have you in the office to get a filling or root canal. During that visit, we prepare the tooth and make molds needed for a lab to create the crown. We will send you home with a temporary crown and then have you return when the lab sends us your new crown. So, it takes two office visits, plus the treatment time needed for whatever has harmed the tooth.
